Clever Boys progress to Last 16

Second-half goals from Getaneh Kebede and Asive Langwe handed Bidvest Wits a hard-fought 2-0 victory over AmaBEE FC in a Nedbank Cup Last 32 match at the Sinaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The PSL side were expected to easily dominate the cup tie but found their hosts exceptionally difficult opponents, and had AmaBEE capitalised on their early chances, it could well have been a different outcome.

The minnows started strongly and forced Moeneeb Josephs into an early save, with the goalkeeper keeping out an effort from Mofutsana.

On eight minutes AmaBEE’s forward Cele had a great opportunity to put his side ahead, but he failed to take advantage of a one-on-one situation and allowed Josephs to bail his team out.

The SAFA Second Division side looked the likelier scorers throughout the first half, but they needed goalkeeper Rakoma to make an outstanding stop to deny Robin Ngalande netting for the Clever Boys against the run of play.

Yet that close shave still didn’t deter AmaBEE, who proceeded to hit the post through a header from Cele, while Ledwaba missed a great chance just before the break.

Wits made a change at the start of the second half which saw Ayanda Lubelo replace Denver Mukamba in midfield, and the visitors nearly opened the scoring in the 49^th minute through another effort from Ngalande that Rakoma managed to keep out.

Seven minutes later the top flight broke the deadlock and took a 1-0 lead courtesy of Ethiopian striker Getaneh Kebede, who finally had the beating of the excellent Rakoma.

The Clever Boys, having established a lead and seen off the pressure of their ambitious hosts, were able to control the game but had to wait until the 89^th minute to ensure victory, with Asive Langwe netting the second goal to seal a 2-0 victory.
