City knocked out of Nedbank by Arrows

Bongi Ntuli scored the only goal of the match as Lamontville Golden Arrows defeated Polokwane City 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup round of 32 encounter at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night.

The result marked Arrows’ third victory of the season over the newly-promoted side, adding to the two league wins.

Chances were few and far between in the opening quarter of the match but Kgothatso Mashia did well under pressure to punch away Kgotso Polelo’s cross in the 14th minute.

Six minutes later Arthur Bartman also got involved in the action, using his strong hands to parry an effort from Mothusi Gopane.

Mashia pulled off the first big save of the game in the 23rd minute, using his reflexes to keep out an effort from Jabulani Nene following a corner.

The City goalkeeper almost turned from hero to villain six minutes later when his fumble presented Manti Moholo with a glorious shot, but the midfielder shot just wide of the target.

Namibian international Deon Hotto then drew another low save from Mashia in the 36th minute, and Polelo fired wide of the target just moments later.

Arrows continued to search for the opener but Nene failed to keep his shot down in the 41st minute as the first half ended scoreless.

Abafana Bes’thende had the first real chance in the second half as Ntuli played the ball across to find Polelo, but the latter blasted his shot over the crossbar.

The winning goal eventually arrived in the 75th minute as Ntuli evaded his marker to latch onto a lofted pass before beating Mashia from the left side.
