Niang knocks Tuks out Nedbank Cup
Former University of Pretoria marksman Mame Niang came back to haunt his former side as his goal in extra time secured a 1-0 win for SuperSport United in a Nedbank Cup Last 32 clash at Tuks Stadium in Tshwane on Saturday.
The win secures Matsatsantsa’s place in the last-16 while Tuks fail to progress past the first round for the second season in succession, they were knocked out by Maritzburg United at the same stage last year.
SuperSport United started the game off the brighter of the two sides, controlling possession and looking the more threatening in attack.
It was the home side though who created the first clear cut opportunity of the encounter and looked to have found the lead in the 20th minute through Geofrey Massa.
The Ugandan out jumped Bevan Fransman before planting his header in the back of the net but his effort was chalked off with the linesman adjudging that he was in fact in an offside position when doing so.
AmaTuks looked the better of the two sides as the half grew to an end. First, Mpho Matsi forced Rowen Williams into a smart save on the half-hour mark before Thabo Mnyamane directed his effort just over the Matsatsantsa shot stoppers crossbar.
Mnyamane, who has been superb since arriving at Tuks from University rivals NWU-Pukke, found himself in a pocket of space on the edge area - his snapshot looked to have Williams beaten but unfortunately for the youngster is was a tad too powerful.
At half-time it was University of Pretoria 0-0 SuperSport United.
Matsatsantsa had a chance to open the scoring through De Oliveira within minutes of the second half. The Angolan forward found himself through on goal but Washington Arubi was quick off his line to deny the youngster.
Williams somehow denied Geofrey Massa what could’ve been the winner in the 77th minute. A swift counter-attack ended with Ugandan who somehow couldn’t find a way past Williams from point blank range.
Despite all the attacking football on display by either side towards the end of the second half neither side could find a way past the opposition goalkeeper in regulation time.
The game looked destined to be decided from the penalty spot but up popped Mame Niang who headed home the winner for United against his former side in the 107th minute.
It was the third time this season SuperSport beat their cross town rivals 1-0.
