AmaZulu progress in Nedbank Cup
AmaZulu booked their place in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 when they defeated United FC 2-0 at Olympia Park on Sunday afternoon.
United FC captain Mpho Mvelase scored an own-goal early in the first half before Bongani Ndulula sealed the win after the break.
Usuthu got off to a good start as Mvelase nodded the ball into the back of his own net while trying to clear an inswinging freekick from Marc Van Heerden in the 6th minute.
United FC did get the ball into the back of the net in the 17th minute when Abram Mahlaba beat Tapuwa Kapini from close range, but the goal was not allowed to stand as he was adjudged to have strayed offside.
Siyabonga Zulu then drew a comfortable low save from the AmaZulu goalkeeper in the 20th minute, while Alfred Lekata volleyed over the crossbar three minutes later.
The hosts continued to threaten will long range shots and in the 31st minute Mahlaba watched his solid strike flying just wide of Kapini’s left post.
Van Heerden almost increased Usuthu’s advantage ten minutes later but his freekick curled just wide of the target as the score remained 0-1 at the break.
United had a chance to equalise in the 53rd minute when Matlaba got his shot on target from just inside the box, but his shot was well-held by Kapini.
Usuthu doubled the lead three minutes later as Njabulo Manqana poked the ball through for Ndulula to finish with a composed chip over the goalkeeper.
Manqana almost got his name on the score sheet in the 69th minute, only to be denied by a good save from Gatsha Majola after he was set up by Ayanda Dlamini.
United were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute but Kapini made a great save to maintain the two-goal lead, diving to his right to parry Mahlaba’s effort from the spot.
The final chances of the match fell for Usuthu, but John Arwuah failed to keep his effort down in the 90th minute, while Ayanda Dlamini drew a brilliant one-handed save from Majola in added time.
