SuperSport pour more misery on Swallows
Goals from Bennett Chenene and Dino Ndlovu helped SuperSport United to a 2-1 win over Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership game at the Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday. Giorgi Nergadze scored early for the hosts.
Zeca Marques made one change to the side that were held to a goalless draw last time out, with Roger da Costa replacing the suspended Luvhengo Mungomeni.
Meanwhile, Cavin Johnson named the same team that trumped Mpumalanga Black Aces last week.
Swallows opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute through Giorgi Nergadze. Lerato Chabangu picked out an unmarked Nergadze with a floated corner-kick, the Georgian made no mistake, nodding past a flat footed Rowen Williams in goal.
As a result United pushed forward in an attempt to find the equaliser in quick time. Subsequently Mor Diouf found himself up field in an attempt to assist the Matsatsantsa attackers.
The sturdy centre back, though, showed why he is used as a defender in the 18th minute when he failed to hit the target after finding himself in acres of space inside the opposition box.
United continued to create chances, with Diouf notably missing another sitter, before former Moroka Swallows midfielder Bennett Chenene finally levelled matters for the visitors.
Lebogang Manyama ran on to Thuso Phala’s precise through ball before playing it into the path of Chenene, who tapped into an open net to bag his second goal in as many games, 1-1.
Sameehg Doutie looked to have found United’s second on the cusp of first half stoppage time but his goal was chalked off.
The former Ajax Cape Town winger’s initial attempt cannoned off the crossbar before he seemed to handle the rebound before tapping past Greg Etafia. Replays suggested the ball in fact hit his chest.
Dino Ndlovu handed United the lead six minutes into the second stanza. Doutie brilliantly picked out Phala, who in turn played it into the path of Ndlovu who prodded the ball past Etafia.
Chances were few and far between as the half grew to an end with SuperSport’s defence holding firm despite late pressure from the hosts.
The win moves United within two points of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, while the loss for the Dube Birds moves them up one place into eighth following Bloemfontein Celtic’s 3-0 loss at Kaizer Chiefs.
