Celtic crush Maties

Bloemfontein Celtic proved levels ahead of the University of Stellenbosch when they ran riot with an 8-0 victory at the Coetzenburg Stadium to progress into the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday evening.

Musa Nyatama stunned the debutants with a hat-trick after 17 minutes, while both Vuyani Ntanga and Lerato Lamola completed a brace each as Stellies missed a penalty.

This type of match was undoubtedly the biggest match in Maties’ history as they became the first team from the winelands to participate in this stage of the tournament.

Reggie Jantjies’ side had to go through eight play-off matches in order to qualify for this round, with their last victory coming in a 2-1 result against Vodacom side Zeesha.

Celtic made it through to the quarter-finals of last season’s edition of the competition, and they proved they had a certain advantage over the Stellenbosch outfit when they took the lead after eight minutes.

It was a scrappy goal which allowed for Musa Nyatama to put it past the goalkeeper.

The Free Sate club went 3-0 up in the space of five minutes when the Mamelodi Sundowns loanee completed his hat-trick, with his second goal seeing him beat Gillroy Olivier to slot in a nice finish and his third just as crucial.

Stellies were then handed an opportunity to reduced the deficit after Patrick Tignyemb was guilty of bringing a player down. Alcardo Van Graan stood up to take the effort, but failed to convert under pressure.

The home side were left to rue their wasted opportunity as Celtic went 4-0 up with less than half hour played, this time Lerato Lamola finding the back of the net.

Maties’ best chance in the half was clipped over the crossbar by Tignyemb, while Joel Mogorosi squandered a chance to hand the visitors their fifth goal when he had just Olivier to beat.

The Botswana international made amends for his near miss when he continued Celtic’s dominance with a goal of his own ten minutes before the interval.

Two more goals were added by the Free State club on the brink of the half time whistle which saw Vuyani Ntanga find the back of the net on both occasions.

Ernst Middendorp brought on Thembalethu Moses in place of Tignyemb in goal and it didn’t seem to have any affect on their backline when Lamola completed his brace minutes after the restart.

With the visitors having undoubtedly embarrassed the home side with their onslught, Celtic took their foot off the gas as they kept their eight-goal advantage well in tact to progress into the next round of the competition.
