Celtic beaten by league leaders

Bloemfontein Celtic’s strong form in the Absa Premiership suffered a blip on Wednesday night when they were beaten 3-0 by league leaders Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

The MTN-sponsored side had picked up seven points from their three previous matches in the top flight, but strikes from Bernard Parker, Knowledge Musona and an unfortunate own goal from Keegan Buchanan saw them defeated in Soweto.

The hosts showed their intentions early on but Celtic’s goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb proved to be wide awake, stopping an effort from Siphiwe Tshabalala in the fourth minute, before denying Parker in the 10th minute.

Both side then had opportunities midway through the half with Joel Mogorosi heading wide from Keagan Buchanan’s corner in the 28th minute, while Tshabalala was unable to keep his shot down a minute later after cutting in from the wing.

The opening goal arrived in the 43rd minute as Parker picked his spot from inside the box after Celtic were unable to clear the ball following Kingston Nkhatha’s mistimed attempt.

Parker asked the questions again five minutes into the second half but he was unable to grab his brace as his shot missed the target, while Gabadinho Mhango’s effort was well-held by Itumeleng Khune in the 53rd minute.

Celtic were denied an equaliser in the 60th minute after Musa Nyatama had threaded the ball through for Mogorosi, only for the latter to see his effort coming off the crossbar.

Chiefs soon doubled their lead in style in the 71st minute as Musona beat Tignyemb with a brilliant curler into the top corner.

Celtic tried to pull a goal back but were stunned again in the 89th minute as Buchanan nodded the ball into his own net while trying to clear a corner.

The final chance of the match fell for Mogorosi, but it proved not to be his day as his effort sailed just wide of the post.
