SuperSport held by Stars
SuperSport United’s title ambitions received a knockout blow when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Platinum Stars in their Absa Premiership clash at the Atteridgeville Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result leaves Matsatsantsa a full 15 points behind league leaders Kaizer Chiefs and out of the running for the top prize.
They had to come from behind in this one too as Siphelele Mthembu put Stars ahead, but Thuso Phala netted against his former employers to earn SuperSport a point.
Jabu Mahlangu was selected on the bench for Matsatsantsa but did not get on in his PSL return.
After a lively start, the match was halted shortly after the kick-off with concerns over the floodlights at the venue, which did not appear to be fully operational. The players returned 10 minutes later to resume play.
Dino Ndlovu should have done better when a neat one-two with Lebogang Manyama created a shooting opportunity from close-range, but he scooped the ball over the bar.
Stars had the lead on 33 minutes when a mix-up at the back for Matsatsantsa allowed Mthembu a free run on goal and he provided a neat finish past Williams.
That was the way it remained at the break, but just past the hour-mark SuperSport drew level.
Phala looked to be going nowhere in the corner but wriggled free of three defenders before firing low past Siyabonga Mpontshane to score against his former club.
SuperSport United (0) 1 (Phala 62’)
Platinum Stars (1) 1 (S Mthembu 33’)
SuperSport: Williams, Moeketsi, Diouf, September, Khumalo, Gyimah, Mokeke (Olivieira 75’), Doutie, Phala, Manyama, Ndlovu (Niang 56’).
Stars: Mpontshane, Mere, Gumede, Semenya, Mpeta, Mathe, Mhlongo, Mbatha, Nyanda (Makudubela 79’), Ngele (Botes 86’), S Mthembu
