Bidvest Wits edge out blunt Arrows
Bidvest Wits returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership when they defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night.
Sithembiso Ngcobo scored the only goal of the match early in the first half as Abafana Bes’thende succumbed to their fifth league defeat in a row.
Arrows came close to taking the lead in the 7th minute when Siyanda Zwane picked out Christopher Katongo at the far post but his point-blank header was diverted wide by Moeneeb Josephs.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when Asive Langwe released Ngcobo on the left side of the box, who then fired an unstoppable shot past the exposed Arthur Bartman.
Four minutes later Josephs pulled off a good save to keep his side in the lead, diving to his right to parry a long rage effort from Jabulani Nene.
Josephs denied Arrows again in the 25th minute, diving low to his left to block a freekick from Philani Shange, before Rudolf Bester fired wide from the rebound.
The hosts came close again in the 42nd minute when Shange found Bester just outside the box, but his low shot was pushed wide by Josephs.
Arrows applied pressure early in the second half but Katongo could only direct his header straight at Josephs after meeting a cross from Zwane in the 62nd minute.
Eight minutes later it was Ngcobo who almost grabbed his brace at the other end when he latched onto a long pass from Erwin Isaacs, only to see his shot deflected onto the crossbar by Bartman.
Both sides had half-chances late in the game but William Thwala fired a tame shot straight at Josephs in the 86th minute, while Erwin Isaacs shot just wide four minutes later.
