Celtic, AmaZulu clash ends in draw
Bloemfontein Celtic and AmaZulu earned a point each when their Absa Premiership encounter ended in a 1-1 draw at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Clear-cut opportunities were few and far between and in the end the two sides had to settle for a share of the spoils as they were unable to make their opportunities count.
Bongani Ndulula had the first sight of goal in the 15th minute when a headed clearance fell kindly for him on the edge of the box but his first-time shot drew a comfortable save from Patrick Tignyemb.
Mogogi Gabonamong made a run to the near post to meet a low cross from Joel Mogorosi in the 25th minute, but his cheeky backheel was saved by Philani Zikalala.
Celtic almost broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Mogogi Gabonamong beat Zikalala to Wandisile Letlabika’s cross, but his header sailed wide just wide of the post.
Musa Nyatama came close from a freekick in the 41st minute but his effort curled wide of goal as the two sides went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
Six minutes later Zikalala was adjudged to have handled a backpass, resulting in an indirect freekick on the left side of the box, but Frank Mhango’s low shot was cleared off the line by Bonginkosi Macala.
Ndulula should have done better in the 51st minute when a freekick from Marc Van Heerden found him free at the far post, but his weak header went just wide of goal.
Both sides searched for the opening goal but substitute Vuyani Ntanga was denied by a solid block from Zikalala in the 71st minute while Van Heerden fired wide of the target from a freekick five minutes later.
The final opportunity of the match fell for Ntanga when he was picked out by Lerato Lamola on the left side of the box in the 83rd minute, but he sidefooted wide of the far post as the match ended scoreless.
