PSL CEO Statement on the Absa Premiership Soweto Derby




The Premier Soccer League (PSL) CEO, Brand de Villiers has announced that the Absa Premiership Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs which was scheduled for Saturday, 01 November 2014 has been postponed.

This follows a request by Orlando Pirates for a postponement in the wake of passing on of club captain and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

De Villiers said: “We received a request from Orlando Pirates this morning to have the postponement of this weekend’s fixture and this request was granted by the League. On behalf of the PSL, we would like to once again convey our heartfelt condolences to Orlando Pirates family and Senzo Meyiwa’s family during this difficult and tragic moment.”

The PSL CEO confirmed that other Absa Premiership fixtures scheduled for this weekend will go ahead as planned.

Bobby Malabie, Group Executive for Marketing, Communications, Citizenship and Public Affairs at Barclays Africa Group, said: “As title sponsor of the Absa Premiership, Absa fully supports the Premier Soccer League’s decision to postpone the Soweto Derby following the tragic passing of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. Absa will continue to offer any support we can during this difficult time.”

The PSL will announce the new date for this fixture in due course.
