GALATASARAY’S enters Mahlangu race

Turkish giants Galatasaray have entered the race to sign Bafana Bafana star May Mahlangu.
The attacking midfielder will remain at Swedish side Helsingborg until the start of the European summer transfer window on July 1, and has a number of interested suitors.

Previous interest has come from Villarreal in Spain, as well as the Dutch duo of Feyenoord and Ajax Amsterdam.

But now Galatasaray have emerged as serious contenders too, with the Turkish media suggesting they have already made contact with Helsingborg.
The team are perennial challengers for the Turkish League and currently have a six-point lead at the top of the table this season with a game in hand.

Their domestic success means they get to get to play plenty of European football, though their recent appearances have been in the Uefa Europa League.
Mahlangu would be the first South Africa to play at the club, but certainly not the first player from Mzansi to ply their trade in Turkey.

It was a popular destination in the mid to late 1990s, with the likes of John ‘Shoes Moshoeu, Steve Komphela, Fani Madida and Pollen Ndlanya all excelling in the country. Ironically, it was also in the NFL during the late 1960s that a club called Powerlines was created by an Italian power cable company of the same name. It produced some of the most exciting football by a South African team. The present Powerlines were named after them, but do not quite live up to the high standards of their predecessors.
