Stanley Matthews new PSL CEO

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza unveiled Stanley Matthews as the new PSL CEO this afternoon.

Matthews will assume his responsibilities on 1 February 2012. Matthews comes with lots of experience in football having served in the PSL Executive Committee for the past five years.

The announcement follows the PSL EXCO meeting today held at the PSL headquarters in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Khoza said: “Mr Matthew’s record speaks for itself. He has been with SuperSport United for the past 12 years; he is one of the well rounded sport administrators in this country.
"We all know how he successfully transformed SuperSport United – from a side that was languishing at the bottom of the league to champions. We know this was a collective effort, but Stanley Matthews was central to that.

“As a person, he is a people’s person who is knowledgeable in football and very articulate. He has been with the PSL for a while and served on several committees. He has also been a member of SAFA and also the joint Liaison Committee. He is joining a dynamic team.”
“We decided to look inside the PSL because we believe we have people who have the talent and expertise to be successful in the job," Khoza added.

Matthews had a successful stint with three-time Absa Premiership champions, SuperSport United where he served as the Director of Football.

Matthews said: “This is a day of many emotions for me. I’m humbled, excited but most importantly I’m appreciative to the chairman and the executive committee for giving me an opportunity to be the CEO of the most successful league in Africa.

“I have been part of the PSL family for a while now. I think this will be a smooth transition. There is nothing that is broken. Today, I can only reflect on the past. I want to thank SuperSport United including the chairman and the management for all the support. I’m looking forward to the new challenge and new life at the PSL,” the new PSL CEO said.
Matthews will take over the seat vacated by former PSL CEO, Zola Majavu who left the League few weeks ago.
