Diski Challenge Sunday results
Chippa United were the biggest winners in round five of the
MultiChoice Diski Challenge on Sunday, with Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi
Sundowns topping the two sections following the double round of games played at
the University of Pretoria (Tuks) over the weekend.
The Chilli Boys crushed AmaZulu 4-1, while Siwelele and the
Brazilians both drew, although it was enough for them to consolidate their
positions after a two-day festival of football in the capital.
After all Saturday's game produced winners, draws were the
order of the day on Sunday with four matches ending in the points being shared.
But Chippa were amongst the four winners as they demolished
Usuthu thanks to a pair of goals each for Siyabulela Shai and Khanyisa Mayo.
Mayo, the son of former Bafana Bafana marksman Patrick,
opened the scoring in the 20th minute, before Shai, whose father is Sundowns
legend Issac, doubled the advantage four minutes later.
AmaZulu, who have struggled to adapt to the new Reserve
League and remain winless, had a lifeline before the break but blew their
chance after Mzo Mthembu's penalty was saved by Qhamakuhle Lizani.
Mayo and Shai then added second-half goals either side of a
Sihke Shezi (71) consolation as the Port Elizabeth side ran out easy winners.
Orlando Pirates missed the chance to climb top of Group B
ahead of Sundowns after they were stunned 2-1 by Platinum Stars.
Midfielder Kobamelo Kodisang scored a brace for Dikwena,
with Sibusiso Mahlangu netting a consolation for the Bucs.
In another match that produced a result, Ajax Cape Town
edged out SuperSport United 2-1. Goals from Justin Jacobus and Sithembiso Ngidi
cancelled out each other in the first half, with Charlton Basson grabbing a
69th minute winner.
There was one other game where there was a winner as home
favourites Tuks lost out 3-2 to Polokwane City in a five-goal thriller.
Amongst the four drawn matches, Moroka Swallows ended their
losing start to the campaign by holding Kaizer Chiefs to a goalless draw.
Group A leaders Celtic threw away their lead against 10-man
Maritzburg United in a 1-1 scoreline. Wayde Jooste fired the Free Staters ahead
in the first half, before the KwaZulu-Natal outfit were reduced to 10 men after
the dismissal of Tshepo Moloto.
However, Sandile Dlamini’s 57th minute header stunned Celtic
and snatched an unlikely point for the Team of Choice. Group B pace-setters
Sundowns were left equally frustrated as they were kept to the same 1-1 score
against Bidvest Wits.
The Brazilians, with players like Anthony Laffor, Ejike
Uzoenyi and Luyolo Nomandela in their line-up, should have been behind on the
half-hour when Sthembiso Msomi saw his penalty saved by Thela Ngobeni.
And they were lifted by that moment as Ntandoyenkosi Ngubane
gave the men in yellow the lead before the break. But Wits, fielding the likes
of Erwin Isaacs, Aviwe Langwe and Toriq Losper, refused to surrender and were
rewarded with a 65th minute equaliser for Tshidiso Monamodi.
Finally, another match that ended 1-1 was the clash between
Mpumalanga Black Aces and Free State Stars as an Aubrey Maphosa (86) equaliser
cancelled out Sinawo Masana’s first-half opener.
