Vilakazi strikes seals win for Wits
Sibusiso Vilakazi scored the only goal as Bidvest Wits overcame
University of Pretoria 1-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the
Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Tuks were awarded free kick 40-yards out from the centre of goal in
the second minute of the match. A direct attempt at goal seemed far,
but striker Geofrey Massa let rip a thunderous shot which initially
caught Wits keeper Moeneeb Josephs off guard, but the former Orlando
Pirates shot stopper pulled off a stupendous save.
Matthew Pattison should have given the Clever Boys the lead in the
20th minute as he was one-on-one with the keeper after Ryan Chapman
had sent him through with a back-heel, but the former Mamelodi
Sundowns midfielder drilled a low shot into the arms of AmaTuks keeper
Washington Arubi.
Both sides went into the break with the score at 0-0 after a first
half that had few chances at goal, but fouls aplenty from either side.
The second started off on a costly not for the home side when Calvin
Kadi was sent off after a 50-50 tackle with AmaTuks captain Buhle
Mkhwanazi.
The Clever Boys gave the tense crowd some jubilation when they scored
in the 63rd minute. Their playmaker Vilakazi beat a couple of AmaTuks
defenders as he cut in from the left side of the field and curled the
ball into the top corner beyond the reach of an outstretched Arubi in
the 63rd minute.
Wits held on for the vital three points, which was their second
successive league win after they were 2-0 winners at Free State Stars
two weeks ago.
The win for the Clever Boys sees them move up to second position on
the Absa Premiership log, whilst AmaTuks are placed 12th on the
standings.
