Telkom Knockout
Platinum Stars vs Mamelodi Sundowns
2013/14 Season
Match background
-
Platinum Stars will look to continue their strong form against Mamelodi
Sundowns when the teams meet in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal at Moruleng
Stadium on Saturday, 19 October 2013, kick-off at 19h00.
-
Stars booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout
with a 2-0 home win over Maritzburg United in the previous round, with goals
from Botes and Ng’ambi.
-
The Rustenburg team has played 12 Telkom Knockout matches since the
tournament’s inception in 2006, recording five wins, three draws and four
defeats. They have won one of the three penalty shootouts they have been
involved in.
-
Dikwena’s best showing in the Telkom Knockout era is winning the
tournament in 2006. Since then, however, they have only once progressed beyond
the last 16.
-
In League Cup history, Stars also reached the final in 2003 but were
beaten 2-0 by Kaizer Chiefs. At that stage they were still known as Silver
Stars.
-
Sundowns avenged their loss in last season’s Telkom Knockout final to
Bloemfontein Celtic by defeating the outgoing champions 4-0 away from home.
Billiat scored a brace for the Tshwane side.
-
The Tshwane team has played 18 Telkom Knockout matches since the
tournament’s inception in 2006, recording 11 wins, two draws and five defeats.
They have lost both of the penalty shootouts they have been involved in.
-
The Brazilians have twice reached the final in the Telkom Knockout era
(2007/08 & 2012/13), but failed to claim the trophy on either occasion.
-
In League Cup history, ‘Downs have won the tournament twice (1990 &
1999) and ended as runners-up four times (1997, 1998, 2007 & 2012).
-
In head-to-head stats, Stars and Sundowns have met in four previous cup
clashes.
-
Dikwena boast two outright wins, while the Brazilians have one outright
victory and one via a penalty shootout.
-
The teams’ most recent cup clash was in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank
Cup last season. Stars came from behind to win 2-1 away from home.
-
Dikwena and ‘Downs have met once before in the Telkom Knockout: a
2010/11 last 16 clash that the Tshwane team won 1-0 away from home.
-
Overall, the teams have clashed in 25 matches across all competition
since 2003/04.
-
Each club has claimed eight wins and there have been nine draws. Stars
have scored 21 goals, ‘Downs 20.
-
The Rustenburg side does not have a good home record against the
Brazilians, with just two wins from 11 league and cup matches. They haven’t
beaten ‘Downs at home since the 2009/10 season.
-
The teams have met once already this season, a league clash early in the
campaign that ended 1-1. Stars are unbeaten in their last seven league and cup
matches against the Tshwane side.
-
