Efstathiou fuming with latest postponement
Ajax Cape Town Executive Director, Ari Efstathiou is extremely unhappy with the state of affairs relating the latest postponement of the Ajax Cape Town v Orlando Pirates fixture.
The game was postponed for the third time this month; it was originally scheduled for August 17 before it was moved to the August 20th due to Pirate’s participation in the CAF tournament; then after Pirates progressed to the MTN8 semi-final we were informed that the game against Chiefs would be played on 21 August so our game was postponed.
The fixture against Pirates was then moved to August 27th. We were informed a couple of days later that due to the nature of the semi-final, being a grade A game, it could not be played on the 21st. Surely this was known to the PSL prior to cancelling our fixture against Pirates scheduled for the 20th. We were then informed that the match was set down for the 27th which we agreed to only to be informed today that the game would be postponed once again indefinitely.
Efstathiou also confirmed that with the latest postponement, Ajax Cape Town was informed outside of the prescribed period as set out by the PSL, which is 5 working days.
We were lead to believe that Pirates may have a problem relating to their Champions League game in Egypt. We understand their position; however we have not been furnished with details as to their attempts to re arrange their fixture with CAF.
The reality is that Ajax Cape Town will not play a game in four weeks. The Urban Warriors will be idle without playing a competitive game since August 3rd and will only play again on Sunday, September 1st , that’s two games four weeks apart followed by the Wits fixture (Sept 13th) and the Sundowns fixture (25th Sept).
We have another break of one month before we play Free State Stars on Oct 23rd and three days later we face the University of Pretoria.
We are not happy with the state of affairs and the club has expressed their dissatisfaction to the league.
“It’s extremely disappointing to find ourselves in this situation; we are a professional club playing in a professional league. We invest time and resources to ensure that we honour our fixtures in a professional and efficient manner and cannot allow situations like what has transpired to continue” Efstathiou concluded.
