Usuthu bounced back against SSU

AmaZulu returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership at the at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Saturday evening, with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United.

Evergreen forward Siyabonga Nomvethe and Ovidy Karuru found the back of the net for Usuthu. Aubrey Modiba missed a penalty kick for the visitors on a largely frustrating night for Eric Tinkler's troops on the East Coast of South Africa.

Usuthu conjured the first shot in anger with five minutes on the clock following a goalkeeping error from Reyaad Pieterse. Mhlengi Cele, though, failed to pounce on the mistake as he fired his resulting shot straight at the shot-stopper who was stranded well off his line.

The KwaZulu-Natal outfit duly opened the scoring in the 11th minute as Nomvethe popped up the far post to hammer home a low cross from Karuru.

SuperSport came within inches of leveling matters seven minutes later, but Morgan Gould was unlucky to see his acrobatic effort canon off the woodwork with Siyabonga Mbatha well beaten.

AmaZulu doubled their lead on the cusp of halftime following a gift from Pieterse who passed the ball straight to Karuru. The Zimbabwe international made no mistake, as he guided the ball home via the inside of the post.

Matsatsantsa squandered a golden chance to half their deficit in the 62nd minute after Thuso Phala was brought down inside the area.

Modiba, though, failed to convert the ensuing spot-kick as Mbatha came up trumps for the hosts.

The Usuthu goal-minder was determined to keep a clean sheet and pulled off a superb diving save to deny Teboho Mokoena late on, as AmaZulu ultimately held on for a deserved win to end their seven game winless streak.

Next up for AmaZulu is a clash against Bloemfontein Celtic at the very same venue on Wednesday evening. Matsatsantsa welcome Polokwane City to Atteridgeville this Tuesday.
