City savage a point against SSU

SuperSport United and Polokwane City drew 1-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Tuesday night.

The draw sees Matsatsantsa and Rise and Shine remain 11th and 12th respectively on the league standings. Morgan Gould opened the scoring, but Puleng Tlolane grabbed a late equalising goal.

Rise and Shine dominated possession in the opening stages of the encounter and they should have broken the deadlock 10 minutes into the game.

Rodney Ramagalela was sent through on goal by Tlolane, but the former was brilliantly denied by SuperSport goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse after the hosts’ defence was exposed.

The visitors then suffered a blow when Rendani Ndou went down injured and they made an early substitution with Dominic Chungwa replacing the disgruntled Polokwane striker.

Matsatsantsa grew in confidence as the game progressed and Aubrey Modiba was somehow denied by Polokwane keeper George Chigova from a one-on-one situation in the 18th minute.

However, Eric Tinkler’s side deservedly opened the scoring on the hour-mark when Dean Furman’s free-kick was headed home by Gould to make it 1-0 to SuperSport following a period of sustained pressure.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Kingston Nkhatha were then denied by Chigova as Matsatsantsa looked to extend their lead with the halftime break fast approaching.

Rise and Shine were able to contain the hosts until the match referee blew the halftime whistle and SuperSport were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Gould had a chance to grab his brace seven minutes into the second half, but the towering defender placed his header just over the crossbar with Chigova rooted to the ground.

With his side trailing, Polokwane coach Bernard Molekwa pulled out Edgar Manaka and he introduced Vusimuzi Mngomezulu as Rise and Shine looked to level matters.

The visitors attacked in numbers in search of the equalising goal, but they were left vulnerable at the back, and Teboho Mokoena's header went just over the crossbar in the 77th minute following a quick move by Matsatsantsa.

SuperSport coach Tinkler then made a tactical change in the 88th minute - pulling out Modiba in favour of Denwin Farmer, a defender by trade, as the hosts looked to hold on to their slender lead.

However,Tlolane scored with a deflected shot in stoppage time to ensure Polokwane held SuperSport to a 1-1 stalemate.
