Sundowns book final eight spot

Mamelodi Sundowns came from a goal down to beat Golden Arrows 4-1 in a last 16 round Nedbank Cup tie at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening.

Philani Shange opened the scoring for the hosts but goals from Dove Wome, Lebohang Mokoena, Anthony Laffor and Percy Tau booked Sundowns’ place in the final eight.

Sundowns looked to dominate from the onset but it was the home side who took the lead through Philani Shange in the 13th minute.

Siyanda Zwane made a driving run down the right flank before playing the ball into the area, his cut-back evaded a couple of Sundowns players but not Shange who produced a powerful shot to send the home fans into delirium.

Sundowns continued to press forward and finally found their reward six minute before the break. Laffor played in Wome whose low drive from an acute angle got the better of Nkosingiphile Gumede.

Golden Arrows 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns  at the break.

The old-guard of Teko Modise, Alje Schut and Surprise Moriri combined very well 10 minutes into the second stanza with the latter’s effort smashing off the post, before Mokoena grabbed the lead for the Brazilians in the 58th minute.

‘Cheeseboy’ found himself in a pocket of space just outside the area before smashing the ball past Gumede.

Four minutes later and it was 3-1. Laffor left two defenders in his wake before finishing off superbly with the outside of his boot.

Percy Tau capped off a superb comeback in the 90th minute.

Teko Modise hit the inside of the post before recovering the rebound and setting up Tau who produced an exquisite first time finish to net his first goal of his Sundowns career.
