Klate looking to make history

Winger Daine Klate is on the verge of joining soccer royalty. Should Orlando Pirates successfully defend the league title in the next two matches, Klate will accompany an exclusive list of players who have won the league title five times.

Klate who has won the PSL league title three times with SuperSport United and once with the Mighty Buccaneers, will equal the record currently held by legends Andre Arendse and the late Ace Ntsoelengoe.

The all-time record is held by former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey, who has six league winner’s medals to his name.
Should Pirates win the league Klate will hold his own exclusive record of having won all five titles in consecutive years.

At only 27, one wonders how many more he will go on to win. However, Klate prefers to focus on the overall team objectives than his own individual accolades.

“On a personal level, this (referring to fifth medal) would be great,” said Klate. “I am an ambitious individual and I want to win all the time. The game against Celtic is not the final match and the league might be won on Saturday, we have to keep pushing and fight until the last game.

“Six points is all we have been focussing on. Over and above the goals I would like to achieve as an individual, the team goal is the main target as this is a team sport.

Meanwhile, midfielder Andile Jali who has put in an industrious performance in the heart of the Pirates midfield this season says that he is aware of the task at hand and doesn’t feel any pressure leading up to the match.

“We are playing at home and the pressure is not on us. How can you be under pressure in your own house?
“We are at home and we will simply show that in our home we have to win,” concluded Jali.
