Ajax looking keep Serero

AJAX Amsterdam have told Thulani Serero they want him to stay at the club next season but are also concerned about his lack of game time this season

His agent Mike Ntombela has just returned from a visit to the Netherlands to discuss the player's future after his debut season did not deliver on expectations.

"They are thinking they want to keep him, but they are also worried about game time," said Ntombela, a former Mamelodi Sundowns captain who discovered Serero's talent when he was a teenager.

"They haven't spoken about loaning him out, but normally in Europe that is what happens when players need more game time. We will have to see what happens."

The reason for Serero's lack of impact at Ajax has been blamed on various factors - injuries and allegations that he was overweight.

But Ntombela says a change in tactical approach by Ajax in their chase for the title has meant Serero has not been getting a chance. He has only featured in the starting line-up once this season, and that was an early round cup game against lower league opposition.

But he was brought on as a substitute against Manchester United in the Uefa Europa League in February, the last time he featured in the first team.

Serero has been featuring regularly for Ajax reserves and doing well in a new role as a defensive midfielder, playing a traditional No6 position, Ntombela said.
