Valuable win on the road for Wits
Bidvest Wits have beaten Maritzburg United 3-1 in an Absa Premiership tie at Harry Gwala Stadium, a result that takes them up to second on the log.
The goals came from Matty Pattison, Getaneh Kebebe and Calvin Kadi while Thokozani Sekotlong netted for the home side.
The match at Harry Gwala Stadium started a few minutes late due to the late arrival of one of the assistant referees.
Just seven minutes into the game and Bidvest Wits midfielder Matthew Pattison put away a right-footed shot to open the scoring in what, up until then, had been an uneventful opening few minutes.
Then in the 17th minute the visitors had another chance on goal when Ethiopian striker Getaneh Kebebe shot on goal but put his effort just wide.
In the 33rd minute Maritzburg’s Ruben Cloete sent in a dangerous looking free kick, but goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs smothered the danger quickly.
Then it was the turn of Maritzburg goalkeeper Shuaib Walters to make a save when he denied Kofi Dankwa a goal following a corner kick.
And on the stroke of half time Moeneeb Josephs again did well, this time to turn a Heinrich Isaacks shot away from goal.
Bidvest Wits doubled their lead through Getaneh Kebebe after 61 minutes after some good work by Ryan Chapman.
Then Mohammed Awal sent his header over the bar after 74 minutes following a Michael Morton free kick.
There was some hope for the home side when substitute Dillon Sheppard hit a free kick into the wall and from the resultant corner kick, Thokozani Sekotlong stuck the ball away.
In the dying seconds Calvin Kadi made it three for Wits following good work by Papy Faty.
