Chiefs get fourth in a row

Kaizer Chiefs racked up their fourth successive league win when they defeated University of Pretoria 1-0 at the FNB Stadium on Monday evening.

Knowledge Musona scored the only match of the goal in a tightly contested Absa Premiership encounter.

A howler by AmaTuks by goalkeeper Washington Arubi gifted the Amakhosi the lead. The goalkeeper saw his tame goal kick anticipated by Chiefs striker Bernard Parker who laid the ball to his forward partner Musona and the Zimbabwean striker made no mistake from close range in the sixth minute.

Musona was having a good game early on and tested the reflexes of his fellow countrymen Arubi from long range with a low shot which he held onto.

On the half hour mark Chiefs were inches from doubling the lead. Parker, from a set piece on the edge of the box found the head of Erick Mathoho but the tall defender’s flick on just went marginally over the bar with the AmaTuks defenders finding no answers to Chiefs’ questions.

Chiefs winger Siphiwe Tshabalala intelligently lost his marker in the 44th minute and forced Arubi into a stupendous save from a shot from just inside the box which tested him on his near post.

Amatuks had their first real opportunity of the match in the 78th minute. Fullback Charly Moussonou fed Mpho Maruping with a good cross but the latter only tamely headed into the palms of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune from six-yards out.

Chiefs gave a professional debut to exciting young midfielder Philani Cele who replaced Tshabalala and they managed to hold out for the vital three points.

They join Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the standings with 24 points but are placed second on the standings tied on the same number of points with them after they earlier drew their league match at neighbours SuperSport United.
