Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitis responded to liquidation allegations
CEO of Ajax Cape Town, George Comitis, has responded strongly to allegations published in Soccer-Laduma today that the darling of South African football clubs is facing possible liquidation due to the inability of its shareholders to resolve on-going conflict.
It is common knowledge that the club has borne the brunt of feuding between the Comitis and the Efstathiou families who own Cape Town Stars, the company that holds 49% of Ajax Cape Town, in conjunction with 51% majority shareholder, Ajax Amsterdam. The allegations were made following an announcement by Ari Efstathiou that a board meeting will be held on Thursday at which the future of the club will be discussed.
Commenting, Comitis said that there are no grounds for liquidation whatsoever and it would be completely unjustifiable to jeopardize the livelihoods of the professional soccer players who play for the club, their coaches and the staff as a whole for the personal gain of a few individuals.
“Ajax Cape Town has a proud history that has been built over the past 12 years and represents the dreams of thousands of kids wishing to become professional soccer players. Ajax is much stronger than the few individuals who wish to allow a hidden agenda to jeopardize the dreams of these kids as well as the livelihood of our players, our youth players, our coaches, our staff, not to mention letting down our massive support base across South Africa” he said.
Ajax CT was formed in 1999 by Rob Moore, and John Comitis with the amalgamation of two Cape Town-based teams, Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs, at a time when AFC Ajax expanded their worldwide talent-feeder network to South Africa. The club has produced a number of soccer heroes, who include Benni McCarthy, Steven Pienaar and Thulani Serero and has the potential to produce a lot more.
Ajax Cape Town together with Ajax Amsterdam will do everything in its power to ensure the club remains a reliable and valuable member of the South African football fraternity.
