Ngcobo Punishes AmaZulu

Bidvest Wits recorded their first win of the year when they beat AmaZulu 1-0 away at the Princess Magogo Stadium in an Absa Premiership match played on Saturday evening.

Sthembiso Ngcobo netted the only goal of the match in the first half to haunt his former team AmaZulu whom he left at the start of the year to join the Bidvest Wits.

Wits came into this match after two successive losses at the hands of Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town, and avoided a third loss on the trot.

Wits took the lead in the 16th minute when Ngcobo did well to jump the highest in the box and connected well with Papy Faty’s cross on the right flank, the former AmaZulu striker heading home to make it 1-0.

Wits had the better of the exchanges in the first half and were largely guilty of not punishing the home side whose attack was toothless in the final third of the field.

Seven minutes before the end of the first stanza Wits should have taken a two goal cushion into the break.

New signing Jabulani Shongwe interchanged passes with Ngcobo down the left flank, with the former finding his captain Sibusiso Vilakazi at the back post with a good cross, but the skipper could only fire his first time shot high off goal from close range.

Ten minutes into the second half another former AmaZulu man nearly punished the Durban outfit.

This time it was Siboniso Gumede whose effort went inches wide of goal when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box after a corner-kick, but he hit the ball agonisingly wide of goal.

The match would eventually end 1-0 in favour of the away side with Usuthu suffering their first defeat of the year.
