Chiefs go 12 points clear

Kazier Chiefs went 12 points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership log by inflicting a 1-0 win over SuperSport United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Bernard Parker scored the only goal of the game to stretch the Amakhosi’s winning run to nine consecutive victories.

SuperSport were let off as early as the seventh minute when Bernard Parker rushed into the box to connect with a corner kick. The Bafana man was left completely unmarked in the box and stuck a header which went narrowly wide of the post.

The away side responded with their own attack three minutes later which saw Dino Ndlovu thread a ball to Lebogang Manyama. The former Ajax man then snuck a ball through to Sameegh Doutie, only to see his shot fired over the bar.

Kaizer Chiefs only needed 15 minutes to break the deadlock when Parker curled in a free-kick into the back post which left Ronwen Williams rooted to the spot. Weak goal conceded by SuperSport.

Williams prevented the scoreline from changing to 2-0 when he calmly raised a hand to block George Lebese’s shot at the near post just before the half hour mark.

The Matsatsantsa were then saved by the woodwork in the 31st minute when Knowledge Musona rattled the upright after Morgan Gould supplied a long ball up field. SuperSport failed to clear their lines and it allowed for the Zimbabwean to unleash an effort at goal.

The half was concluded with Thato Mokeke’s long-range effort which sailed over the crossbar as Chiefs went into the break leading 1-0.

At the restart Doutie supplied a threatening cross into the box which forced Khune to rush off his line and clutch it midair, before Kgotso Moleko was lucky not to get his second yellow for a high tackle on Ndlovu.

David Mathebula was introduced midway through the second-half and he forced Khune to make a save almost immediately with his shot straight down the channel.

Musona was again denied in the 77th minute, and this time by Williams, who went full stretch to punch away a curling effort out for a corner.

The victory was wrapped up for Chiefs after they saw Siyabonga Nkosi’s stinging effort curl around the angular before Matthew Rusike’s powerful drive was hammered away by Williams.

Chiefs claimed the 1-0 win but SuperSport ended the game with ten men after Enocent Mkhabela was handed his second yellow for getting involved in a player scuffle.

Moleko was eventually shown his second yellow in the eighth minute of stoppage time for another heavy challenge, seeing both teams end a man down.
