Exciting budding partnership between Varsity Sports and 5FM

The fifth season of Varsity Football, made possible by FNB, Samsung and Debonairs Pizza, is set to get underway on 27 July. The action promises to be entertaining as four sizzling hot clashes kick the season off as Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) host University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) - the pick of the opening round fixtures.
Varsity Sports partnered with 5FM at the end of 2016, which saw two powerhouse brands build an amazing partnership that would grow over the next seven months.
5FM’s involvement with Varsity Sports has allowed both brands to reach a wider audience. The partnership kicked off with the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International and Varsity Cricket, at the beginning of 2017.
Since then, campus activations, launches and even match-day experiences have elevated to new levels of fan engagement.
With Varsity Football approaching, the public can expect some exciting encounters and mouthwatering battles. Since its inception in 2013, 349 goals have been scored at an average of three goals per game. A total of 14 Varsity Football players have gone on to become professional players in the PSL (Premier Soccer League) and NFD (National First Division).
UP-Tuks won the inaugural tournament in 2013 and successfully defended their title, a year later. They are the only team to have done it. The University of Western Cape (UWC) lifted the trophy in 2015 while TUT are the defending champions after beating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) 2-1 in 2016.
