Late Kadi goal slays Celtic

A late strike by substitute Calvin Kadi gave Bidvest Wits a 1-0 win away at Bloemfontein Celtic in their final Absa Premiership match of the 2013/14 season.

No matter the result, Bidvest Wits would still have ended the season in third place, but Kadi’s strike meant that Gavin Hunt’s team finish the season very well and will take confidence into next week’s Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates.

The game looked to be heading for a goalless draw until Asive Langwe’s free kick found Kadi’s head in the dying moments of the clash.

With one eye on next weekend’s Nedbank Cup final, Gavin Hunt made several changes to his regular Bidvest Wits starting team with the likes of Dennis Onyango, Benjani Mwaruwari, Robin Ngalande and Tinashe Nengomasha all getting a rare start.

But Hunt was forced into an early substitution when Nengomasha took a knock and could not continue, so he was replaced with the man who provided the goal, Asive Langwe, after just 18 minutes.

Siwelele rising star Lerato Lamola came the closest to opening the scoring in the 34th minute when his header cannoned of the upright following a cross by Lerato Manzine.

On the other end Benjani Mwaruwari put his header wide of goal in the 41sr following some good work by the cross provider Siyabonga Nhlapo.

It took until the 59th minute for the Clever Boys to threaten on goal in the second half when Tebogo Moerane found Nhlapo and the midfielder slammed in shot that Tignyemb managed to save.

A minute later and Bidvest Wits had to make another forced change when ‘keeper Onyango could not carry on and first choice Moeneeb Josephs replaced him.

Mogogi Gabonamong missed the target with a header following a corner inside the final ten minutes, but Kadi would have the final say.

Inside referee’s optional time, Calvin Kadi pounced to net the winning goal with his head.
