‘Downs go top, stretch unbeaten run

Mamelodi Sundowns moved to the top of the Absa Premiership log following a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Surprise’s Moriri’s first half goal stretched the Brazilians’ winning run to seven games.

Kaizer Chiefs lost 1-0 to Mpumalanga Black Aces and subsequently relinquished their place atop of the table.

The first half was a tightly contested affair with both side’s enjoying healthy spells of possession.

Khama Billiat and Clayton Daniels went close on either side of the pitch before Surprise Moriri opened the scoring in the 24th minute.

The evergreen attacking midfielder extended his goal tally for the season to four goals when he nodded Teko Modise’s precise free-kick in from close range.

Siwelele, to their credit, never intended on sitting back and dominated the closing exchanges, winning a procession of corners in the process, but the ‘Downs defence held firm to head into the break a goal to the good.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between in the second half, with Celtic limited to attempts from distance as they searched for the equaliser.

Celtic’s best chance of the half fell to Joel Mogorsi on the cusp of second half stoppage time, the Botswana national beat Mweene to a looping ball, but his effort only managed to go agonisingly wide of the Zambian right hand post.

‘Downs held on to end the night at the summit of the Absa Premiership log.
